Band To Watch: Cult Of Youth

Brooklyn’s Cult Of Youth, primarily the project of multi-instrumentalist/songwriter and onetime Love As Laughter bassist Sean Ragon, has released home-recorded singles and one limited-edition Dais LP since 2007, but this new self-titled Chris Coady-produced, Kevin McMahon-mixed collection is the first he’s recorded with his proper band, bassist Micki Pellerano, drummer Glenn Maryanski, and violinist Christiana Key (who did the string arrangements on labelmate Zola Jesus’s “Poor Animal”). It’s also the first full-length with wider distribution. People who pay attention to the neo-folk, pagan folk, and post-industrial scene, wear Death In June/Current 93 shirts, bring up The Wicker Man occasionally in conversation, or frequent Todd Pendu’s gatherings, will likely be familiar with the band, but 2011 seems like the year the rest of the world will get a taste of Ragon’s frenetic, powerful energy

Cass McComb’s third album on Domino, Wit’s End , will be out in April. It’ll be the followup 2009’s spare and romantic Catacombs . According to Domino, McCombs moved in a darker direction for this record — the press release also says it’s an album with “… sounds that conjure the colors purple and black.” That’s true of this press photo, at least

Hunx And His Punx – “Lovers Lane”

A lot less mean and a lot more romantic than “ You Don’t Like Rock ‘n’ Roll ,” “Lovers Lane” is the lusty, aching opening track from Hunx And His Punx’s upcoming album. Note that they use the distinctive “Boom. Ba boom, cha!” beat from “Be My Baby.” That drumbeat is practically synonymous with teenage heartbreak.

Peter Bjorn & John – “Second Chance” (Stereogum Premiere)

After brief detours resting most of their guitars in favor of keyboards and sample pads on Living Thing in 2009, and most of their voices in favor of horns and extended instrumentals with Seaside Rock the year before, Peter Bjorn & John are back in their uncannily catchy, traditionally arranged pop rock guise. Gimme Some is the band’s sixth album and picks up the direction of Writer’s Block , taking it into equally melodic albeit a scruffier, more downtown/garage direction. They sound hungry.
